Meeting of the platform for Environmental Justice

On June 22, 2022, starting from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a working meeting of the Platform for Environmental Justice was held in the premises of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss hot topics that are relevant at the moment, and also to elect a new president of the Platform for Environmental Justice.

Academic Vlado Kambovski was unanimously re-elected as the President of the Platform, for whom everyone agreed that his many years of experience provide an exceptional contribution and are of exceptional importance, taking into account the activities completed so far in the protection of the environment.

In the second part of the meeting, the two previously announced topics were discussed:
-Clearing the hot spots – Lojane, the hydro power plant Veles, Jegunovce, The smelting plant Veles, landfill Ohrid;
-The new Law on Industrial Emissions

In the discussion section, Mr. Sreten Stojkovski, the director of the SEI, presented about the hot spots that are identified in RNM in total 16, adding that according to him there is also the 17th hot spot, which is Pelenica, where about 8,000 tons of waste were dumped that location.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, Mrs. Hristina Odzaklieska, informed the attendees about the new Law on Industrial Emissions, stressing that in recent years RNM has taken many steps to harmonize the legislation with the EU legislation. Although the environmental law mentions the control of emissions, there are challenges in the transposition of the new legal solutions that are under the Industrial Emissions Directive. Therefore, within the framework of the IPA 2000 project for strengthening the administrative capacities at the central and local level, for the transposition of the new directive on industrial emissions from 2010, a new law on the control of emissions has been prepared with the aim of efficient and effective transposition and implementation of the new requirements. Deputy Minister Odzaklieska informed the attendees that this law should enter into force by the end of this year.
